Semen Analysis

The semen analysis is used to determine the number of sperm in a man's semen as well as the sperm quality. It is one of the first tests that are done to evaluate male fertility and also a way to determine whether a vasectomy has been successful.

The semen analysis does not evaluate all factors that determine semen quality. In fact, about 30% of the men shown to have normal sperm by the analysis turn out to have abnormal sperm function. The opposite is also true - men with poor semen according to the analysis may have children without much difficulty.

The following characteristics are evaluated in a semen analysis:

• Semen Volume.

  Semen volume refers to the amount of semen that is present in one ejaculation.

• Sperm count.

  Sperm count refers to the number of sperm in a man's ejaculate per milliliter (ml). Generally, a number above 20 million sperm in one milliliter is considered normal.

• Sperm motility.

  This characteristic refers to the percentage of sperm that is able to move normally.

• Morphology.

  Morphology measures the percentage of sperm with a normal the outward appearance.

• pH.

  The alkalinity (high pH) or acidity (low pH) of the semen is important to be measured since a pH value that is outside the normal range will be harmful to sperm.

• Fructose level.

  This characteristic measures the amount of fructose in the semen. The fructose is required in order to provide energy for the sperm.

• Liquefaction.

  At the time of ejaculation semen is a thick gel and it becomes liquid in about 20 minutes. The liquefaction time measures the time that is needed for the semen to liquefy.

• White blood cells.

  The high level of white blood cells in semen may be an indication for an infection
