Penis Disorders
Penis disorders range from more mild ones such as edema (swelling) to nerve entrapment and even impotence. Whatever the case is penis disorders should be put to the proper medical examination by a trained physician, since some of them may be particularly dangerous and may even require surgery.
Edema (Swelling)
This type of penis disorder represents swelling of the foreskin and can result simply from sexual activity, including masturbation. It is relatively harmless as long as your foreskin is in its normal position and you haven't impaired your blood flow. However, if this condition persists, it may be a signal of chronic heart disease; therefore you should seek medical advice.
Paraphimosis
The inability to pull the foreskin over the glans to its normal flaccid position is called paraphimosis. This type of penis disorder can result either from the accumulation of fluid in your foreskin after very intense sexual activity or from fluid that is trapped in the foreskin leaving it retracted, sometimes after a medical procedure. Treating the paraphimosis as a medical emergency is mandatory if it persists for several hours.
Peyronie's Disease
This is one of the most common penile disorders and it is more commonly known by men simply as penile curvature. The Peyronie's disease does not necessarily need treatment when the Peyronie's curvatures are mild but severe cases can benefit from correction through surgery or specialized devices.
Pudendal Nerve Entrapment
This type of penis disorder can be caused by hard cycle seats and some accidents. It is characterized by pain which can be worsened by sitting. Sometimes, there is also a loss of sensation and orgasm in addition to the pain.
Priapism
The condition in which the erect penis does not return to normal flaccid state for an extended period of time (about four hours) is described as priapism. This penis disorder is often painful and requires urgent medical attention. Potential severe complications as a result of priapism include ischaemia (if ischaemia results in gangrene, subsequent amputation may be required), thrombosis, and impotence.
Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
Erectile dysfunction (ED), often referred to as impotence, is probably the most widely known penis disorder. It is characterized as inability to reach or maintain erection in order to have a satisfactory sexual performance. Diabetes and natural aging are what most often cause impotence. Various treatments exist, such as drugs.
Penile Fracture
When the erect penis is bent excessively this can cause the rupture of the tunica albuginea, often accompanied by a popping or cracking sound and significant pain. The penile fracture is considered a medical emergency and usually requires medical surgical repair. Immediate measures are mandatory in order to prevent permanent damage.
