The Penis Anatomy

The penis is made up of two larger cylinders and one smaller one. The two larger paired cylinders are called the Corpora Cavernosa and are responsible for the erectile functioning of the penis. They represent spongy tissues that are wrapped in a thick sheath called the tunica albuginea. When you gain erection, these cylinders are filled with blood hardening your penis. The Corpora Cavernosa cylinders split close to the body and are anchored through a tough membrane to the pelvic bone.

As for the third cylinder of the penis, it is called the Corpus Spongiosum and contains the urethra. Near the end of the penis it expands in the form of an obtuse cone that is flattened from above downward. This form is called the glans, or the head of the penis.

During erection, 90% of the blood involved engorges the Corpora Cavernosa and very little of it enters the Corpus Spongiosum. The reason for the existing of the third cylinder, the Corpus Spongiosum, is mainly to prevent eventual compression of the urethra during erection.

The arteries that supply the blood flow to the penis are located down the length of the penis. When the erection ends the only way blood can leave the penis is through a drainage system of veins on the outside tunica of the Corpora Cavernosa. During erection the spongy tissues expand and press against the surrounding tunica albuginea, thus preventing blood from leaving the penis and making it rigid.

Now that you are familiar with the penile anatomy you can better understand why most natural enlargement programs and penis enlargement pills aim to expand the Corpora Cavernosa chambers.
